Through the miracle of the Internet, I was able to contact my Dutch friend, Ed van der Zee and he's given me this history and sent me lots of photos. It appears that before an Amazon was sold, it went to an aftermarket source, where the sunroof was added. Here's what Ed had to say:
"It's correct that Volvo itself didn't mount any sunroofs.
My car's VIN has a 9 for "export", was built in Gent, Belgium, but for some reason was pulled off the line and was sold in the Netherlands.
Several Belgian coach builders did add sunroofs and other alternations. Coenen was the one that mounted most sliding roofs in 1200 cars and later Amazons.
Unfortunately the company doesn't exist anymore so spare parts are difficult to find.
Coenen held the patent for European market. As most of you know, Coenen created an Amazon cabriolet as well. I'm not sure if that included the North American market as well. Did you ever see one?
I get many questions on the sliding roof, it seems to be rare and all functioning."
