OK, maybe I'm obsessing, but this 'klunk' is bugging me. In the process of putting new rear springs on I ended up having to undo the control arms (I think that's what they're called) to get the axle to drop far enough to get the springs in, and so figured while I was in there I may as well put the new bushings in even though the ones in there looked like they were probably OK. Man, getting the control arms bolted back on the ends of the axle was an SOB! (OK, now someone can tell me about the trick that makes it a breeze.....). Figure re-bushing everything in the rear end would at least change the klunk a bit, bit it didn't. And further, I forgot to mention before, it happens as I initially give the car gas in each gear, though the higher the gear the less apparent. Also can be induced by 'surging' the gas, and I think it's coming more from the passenger side. As I said, I had the rear cover off of the diff and everything looks OK inside and there were no big particles or anything in the oil, though it did look a bit dirty and was changed only about 5k ago. Can the splines on the axles wear, possibly causing such a klunk? Wheel bearings (though I remember wearing out of those resulting in more of a whine or roar)? U-joints and support bearing are only about 4k old, so they *should* be OK.....
My dad says live with it until it gets really bad, then it will be easier to find.
