Radiator fan 444-544

I installed two electric fans on the radiator yesterday to push air at the radiator in stop and go traffic. This is definetely necessary in Phoenix where it is easily over 110F sitting still (that's the air temperature)! It will be awhile before the car is operational again so I can test it.

pics to come soon..

I have a question though, about the correct thermostat for a B18 engine radiator. Mine is a 170-180 degree thermostat (I checked that it actually opens at this temperature by throwing it in a pot of boiling water with a thermometer in it), but someone before me drilled two holes in it, so some amount of coolant/water passes through it all the time. Any idea why they did this?

Is there another thermostat (rated higher or lower) that I can buy to preclude the need for this modified design?

thanks
Belinda
