Removing ball-joints without killing myself 140-160 1968

Am I correct in assuming that I can somewhat safely remove and
replace ball-joints from a 140's front suspension without killing
myself?

I've been thinking of how I'd do it and I usually see (in my mind)
a ball-joint breaking loose, a spring flying into my face, and me
waking up a while later eating through a straw for a couple months.

Does the process require spring compressors?
chris
