intermittent rough idle 200 1993

My 93 240 wagon automatic has developed an intermittent rough idle that will lead to a stall if the car is idling in gear. This seems to have no relation to outside temp, ambient moisture, or engine temp, and at times there appears to be no problem at all. By holding the throttle above idle with the brake on I can get through an intersection. Operation above idle seems OK. Is anyone familiar with this problem?
