Installing that cam (part 2) 140-160 1971

That's the crank gear, not the cam gear.

I've used a Craftsman 3 arm puller to great effect many times before on those fiber gears.

I've also used the "hammer the cam back" technique, but that was back before the internet had old Volvo boards and I didn't hear about the "leave the nut on" trick - when the cam popped loose it slammed backwards and popped out that freeze plug. This was a big deal because the engine was in the car. Suddenly my little cam swap project got bigger, but at least I took the opportunity to put a new clutch in (at 90K miles) while the tranny was out.

Once, the fiber outer poertion of the cam gear in my PV's original B18 separated from the steel hub, leaving very little to grab hold of to extract it. I still needed that cam spacer (spaces the gear out on the nose of the cam to proper clearance on the thrust plate). I cursed, hammered, pried, etc on that thing for an hour or two before taking it by a garage nearby with a lot chockful of neat old European cars. The old guy there asked if I still needed the cam, no, and he wandered back into the shop and came back about 5 minutes late with it apart, charged me (as he referred to it) his lunch money ($10).
