Good spark, smell gas - is this in the FAQ? 700 1990

Hey,

'90 740GL w/EGR and non-Regina. I just put in the new engine this week. I put the spark plug wires on 4-3-1-2 and charged battery but no start. I have spark at all cylinders. There is a strong gas smell after cranking for a bit. Car does not seem to try to be starting. I'm going to try to go fabricate a fuel pressure gauge and buy a gauge this morning.

What tests are relevant on the fuel system? Where might the fuel smell be coming from? What is the best way to determine no fuel/too much is getting into the cylinders? This stuff might be FAQ material, but I don't know what to really look for.

Could I spray carb starter somewhere and see if it will start that way? That would certainly rule out timing/ignition problems.

-Nathan
