Timing Is Everything (164)

Last night, I tore into the timing gears on my 1971 164 (B30), due to gear noise. I found the oiling nozzle to be plugged. Once cleaned, I used a pressurized oil gun to try to force 30w oil through it. I got an occasional drop. I know it is not plugged anymore, it is doing all it can do. It does not seem to be enough to properly lube the timing gears. Is this a known problem? Are there any successful mods to improve it?

My timing gears are both steel. Does the fiber cam timing gear operate more quietly? I figure, since I am this far into the engine, I should replace the timing set, especially since it has been noisy. It would literally scream above an idle. Fiber or steel? Thanks in advance!

Jerry
