Gas gauge / capacity question 700

This is pertaining to a 88 740T wagon. Now, this is not something I normally do, however gas around these parts just reached $2.80 gal. I am going to do what I can to keep my mileage as high as possible. Question: once the needle gets BELOW the low side RED indicator, how much gas is actually left in the car? I've read that the indicator artificially registers low as a precaution to actually running out of gas, which is a good thing. Besides, the way gas is going, it might be running it close to the red more than I'd like. Just trying to get a feel for the future. Thanks.
