(Long) Fuel pump stupidity, maybe learn from my mistakes. 200 1982

So the '81 245T starts to get a noisy main fuel pump. Rather than diagnose anything, I buy a new main fuel pump at $160 because I had just repaired the in-tank pump a couple years ago. Well the new pump was noisy too, time to go back into the tank. (stupid)

I had done the 740T in-tank upgrade last time because a brand new stock in-tank pump did not solve my noisy main pump. So I jerk it out of there and it's locked up and the filter sock is lying in the bottom of the tank. Inside the filter sock are pieces of plastic ring that held the sock to the metal collar. There are fins broken off of the impeller too. So I figure one of these pieces of plastic got sucked into the in-tank pump and maybe I can get it out. Well, I remove about half of the broken impeller fins and the pump sorta runs noisilly on the bench so I put it back in the car. (stupid again)

I start the car and let it idle for a few minutes... Then it dies, and won't restart. Grrrr. Must be that mangled in-tank pump.

So I get a stock in-tank pump from NAPA, put it on an old sending unit/downtube I have sitting around (cant use the one in the car because my downtube has been cut for the 740T pump). Put that in this morning and the car STILL won't start. Brand new main fuel pump is suspiciously quiet and the fuse for it is suspiciously hot. I take it out and put my old main pump back in. The car now runs.

I figure a little piece of plastic impeller from the busted in-tank pump got down the line and jammed up my brand new $160 main fuel pump. (really stupid)

Oh well, at least it runs again!
