car stereo 700 1990

I have a '90 740 GL with the factory fitted stereo, i.e., radio+cassette player.

A friend who knows cars really well, told me that I couldn't just buy a market stereo system (because I want to get a CD player and/or a changer) and install it in my car - which I would like to do myself - since the dimensions and the fitting is different.

Is this correct? I was thinking of getting the JVC KD-G310 cd player which can read mp3s as well. This is my first car, so I really wanna learn how to do everything myself.

Can you guys point me to links for what kinda extra fittings I would need to install an aftermarket car-stereo in my 740? Is there an online tutorial I could possibly follow?

btw, I LOVE MY VOLVO!!

(token over-affectionate response)

Thanks, Pranav
