Motor Oil in Old Volvos (and other cars) 120-130

Please weigh in on a topic of conversation I just had with a friend. Is there any benefit to buying the more expensive motor oils offered to put it in your vintage car (or my old beater) or are you just as well off buying the cheap, generic brand at the local auto parts store? Is there a good reason to pay twice as much or more for the same grade of oil?

Thanks,
