Hey there Volvo People.... I've been away for a while. I use to be on the Volvo news groups and mailing lists in the 90s. I had an 85 240DL wagon and a dead 78 262c Bertone I was looking to rebuild with a V8 in it.
Time and money restraints made the 262c go away last year (maybe to someone here, the buyer was a Volvo parts dept manager or some such)... and the 240 wagon was too rusted to be worthy of further repairs. I donated the wagon to a worthy cause and started commuting in a handed down Ford Tempo (grandma bought new and had put 60k on it in 14 well maintained years... since she moved into an assisted living home @89 years young, I threw her a couple hundred for her car).
Well, 14 months and 40k saw the explosion of the front suspension and mounts....
I started shopping for used 1990 or newer RWD wagons within 50 miles of my home and came up with a lot of choices.... $500 through $5000. I've always prefered the quad headlights so I did see an 88 that was temping too.
I ended up with...

heated seats
power everything (all working)
cold AC
roof racks
sunroof
good set of Michelin tires
body never hit or repaired.... other than front bumper fade and a missing side window trim it looks perfect.
They had is on the lot for $1495 and after the test drive I offered $800 cash on the spot. 8-) I drove home with it
