AW 71 Reverse 200 1984

84 245Ti w/AW71; 240K miles...

when starting it up stone cold in the morning, it takes a few seconds to engage reverse gear when I back out. If i try to go too soon, it finally engages with a "clunk" (can't be good). If I let it "pump up" with R selected and foot on brake for 10-20 seconds or so, it's fine. The rest of day, there are no problems. All forward gears engage/shift fine.

Fluid level checks OK and I usually change out three quarts of ATF with every oil change every 5K or so.

Any ideas, other than the transmission is slowly dying?

Thanks

Robert
