Tail light interchangeability 200

I tried to swap out a set of tailights from a 1992 240 volvo to a 1984 240. For some reason I had no brake lights when the pedal was pushed. The third brake light came on, but the brake lights on the rear lights did not. Looking at the wioring digrams, it doesn't look as though the wiring changed. I do realize that the tailights changed starting with the 1986 model.Please advise.
