What happens when you put the wrongs leads on the battery?

I was talking with a buddy of mine who does not know much about cars and he asked me what happens when you connect the wrong battery cables to the wrong battery terminals. Basically putting the negative cable on the positive terminal and vise versa. I told him I did not know so I figured I would ask the gang here if they knew what would happen. I am curious myself.

Thanks for any insight.
