wagon rear hatch handle - getting it horizontal 120-130

The handle for the wagon hatch door at the back end of my 65 wagon is off kilter. The handle is supposed to be level (or horizontal) but it is turned (about 30 degrees) rotated counter clockwise (when you looking at the hatch from the rear).

I've been staring at the hatch so many times with my head tilted, I am in danger of the tilt becoming permanent....but I digress.

On the inside of the wagon hatch door, there is a spring hooked on to the innards of the mechanism. The spring pulls on one side, giving the handle that characteristic tilt. If I remove it the handle is more horizontal (and I assume that is the "correct" position), but the spring serves a purpose.

I can't seem to find a way to compensate for the pulling of the spring so that the handle is horizontal, but for the sake of my neck muscles I would seek ideas from the learned wagonneers on our list.
