Hi,
This is my first time on brick board.
When I drive my volvo more than 30 or 40 minutes for long distances (45 miles)and when it's 85 degrees or warmer outside, the volvo starts to buck, jerk and jump forward, becoming undrivable. After it rests it's ok to drive again. One time I let the car rest for about 3 hours and then it was drivable. I have also waited for the temperature to cool down outside, and then it was ok to drive again too.
Here's some background info. on my car: I have 165K miles on my '82 240 DL volvo. The car is in great shape and looks great too except for this bucking problem. The overdrive was rebuilt a year ago with new o-rings.
The first time it bucked, the overdrive was working. The bucking first began with a big drive from Sacramento, CA through the Sierra Mountains heading to Colorado. I was towing a small trailer with all of my things in it. When I began driving through the mountains, it started to jerk forward and smoke floated up from the gear shifter inside the car. The smoke had no smell. I decided to tow my car the rest of the way to Colorado because I didn't want to risk getting stranded. Once I arrived in Colorado in August, it didn't buck for months. Then recently it has started bucking again (during the summer months) with no smoke coming from the gear shifter. When it bucks, the temperature gauge reads in the mid-range.
The most recent bucking incident happened the other day after driving approximately 45 miles in 85 degree weather. On a side note, the overdrive is no longer working. I don't know if the overdrive is related to the bucking problem, but I thought I'd give you all the information I can about the car.
What I'm most concerned about is the bucking, jumping, and jerking of the car. I have mentioned this problem to my mechanic in Denver and he doesn't know what causes this or how to fix it. Plus, it's a bit hard to re-create the bucking, because it seems to depend on driving a long distance in hot weather.
Let me know if you are familiar with this type of situation. Any input is much appreciated!
Thank you!
Lynn
