Intermittent spark failure 200 1988

My kid's 88 240 is stalling after running a mile or 2, when hot. It runs longer from cold. It can be restarted by jumping the coil to the battery (battery terminal to #15 on the coil). My first try was replacing the coil, that did no good.My mechanic said the computer was defective so I bought a rebuilt ICU and that did no good either. The wire from the coil to the ICU was sitting on the alternator and the insulation had melted. we had that repaired and well taped.
My mechanic says that the new ICU is defective as well (in exactly the same way!). I find this astounding but he onced diagnosed a distributor cap full of water as a computer failure in my 740 .
I need some help with this, the kid's off to school next week. has anyone had a similar problem? what can cause this?
On another note, does anyone know a good volvo mechanic in brooklyn ny?
