Howdy all,
The car in question is an 89 GLE with stock suspension. I bought it in 96 with 150k on the clock. The car now has 360k and I've put a few sets of KYBs on it and haven't been too pleased with the ride. My commute is 100/day, mixed city/highway and I see my share of rough asphalt. Springs front and rear are original as far as I know. Bushings front and rear have been replaced as needed. Don't know if progressive springs would make a difference or not, but I'd be interested in hearing what folks have to say.
Read everything everyone had to say about Bilsteins, Sachs, Boges, Konis, and of course KYBs...we won't talk about Gabriels, etc. Finally settled on a new set of Sachs Advantage front and rear from FCP and can't say I'm exactly dazzled. Didn't want to go with the Bilstein TCs and their 2 year warranty since that in itself tells me something about longevity and I had heard a few horror stories about the rear shock mounts being made from a too soft material and knocking in their mounts over time. The price on the Bilstein HDs made me choke but I would have ponied up the $500 if I'd thought they'd be a smooth ride. Everything I've read leads me to the conclusion that they'll smooth out the big bumps but not the small ones.
I've not done any of the performance mods folks here talk about such as cross braces, IPD sway bars or the like since if I want to tear through corners I'll jump on the Kawasaki. I'd just like to smooth out the bumps and ripples we get in the asphalt here in Colorado. I know I'll never get a Cadillac ride with a solid rear axle, but am interested in what others who have a similar setup to mine have experienced with the strut choices on their rides.
Thanks much,
Jack
