1988 Transmission Trouble or Not?? 200

I doubt anyone can assure you with any degree of certainty that a fluid flush will correct your specific "problem", but I have found that a change to synthetic fluid is a noticeable improvement in shifting, and (based on what synthetics do to engines) probably improves imperceptible aspects of your transmission as well. In other words, it's well worth doing in any case.

But, what do you mean by "power flushing", especially as it relates to "...I have been wanting to do a transmission fluid "power flush" but the weather here in the desert southwest has not permitted...."? Your statement about the weather makes me wonder if you're thinking of the same thing as I am. I routinely flush the fluid in my transmission with new synthetic whenever I buy another car -- it's easy, and unless it's been raining like a biblical flood nonstop and you don't have a garage to work in, I don't understand what you mean. I do the "IPD" thing, which means hooking the hose to the output port of the radiator, and having the transmission pump out 2 quarts at a time, each time followed by replenishment of 2 quarts through the dipstick tube; and then repeating, for x number of quarts (some recommend 12 quarts, whereas I do 20 quarts if this is a first time, to be sure I've displaced as much conventional fluid with synthetic as possible). It must be cool enough, in an early evening, even in the desert, isn't it?
