Injectors out - now what? 700 1986

So my car,744T, has some drivability problems, not major, but still not right. I have gradually been replacing all the common tuneup parts, traps, belts, IAC, etc. Now I have pulled the injectors at 214,000 miles. Looks like they have never been out of the head, although the seals were still pilable, unlike some of the VW's I have worked on where they are rock hard. The ends had a fair build up of black goo, I could still see the silver tip. I found a local shop that cleans injectors, so they are going in tomorrow.

My questions are:

Any tips on how to clean out the port in the manifold where they snap in? I am a bit concerned about getting dirt in the engine. Or dropping something down the hole.

Second my seal kit came with little yellow " hats". The hats on my current injectors are green. I didn't try real hard to pop them off, a little nervous about damage to the tip. Is this something that should be pulled off prior to cleaning??

thanks in advance
