I don't need that muffler, do I? 700

So, the pipe finally rusted through at the junction to the final muffler (or is it just a resonator?), leaving the equally rusty old box to make a nice spanking noise as it bounced on its rubber mounts over boston potholes. I took it off. No ill side effects noted, but the exhaust note on initial acceleration is pleasantly a little more throaty.

Do I really need that second muffler? will the state inspectors descend on me for lacking it? can I just graft on a chrome tip and call it even?

I was toying with the idea of swapping up to IPD's cat-back upgrade anyway, at least if it wasn't so $$. The prospect of a little bump in mileage, Hp, and menacingness is enticing.

What do you all think?
