tailgate latch mechanism 700 1992

Hi everyone,
Newly registered to this site but I've been lurking for a few months after purchasing my first volvo - a 92 740 (235k km) in sweet shape for a mere $3500.
So far the only engine trouble was to replace the RPM meter, but the tailgate is giving me grief.

In addition to needing to install the kit to reattach the interior panel the outside handle is completely disconnected. It's no fun crawling through to open the tailgate from the inside when the wagon is full of kids, luggage and our 85 lb black lab.

I've checked the archives but haven't found the answer to my problem. The rod connecting the outside handle to the latch is disconnected from the latch, and the former plastic clip that joined the two is AWOL (any source for these clips?).

I've tried a few zip-tie tricks to reattach the rod but nothing works yet.

If anyone has had success reconnecting this rod to the handle, I'd appreciate your advice.
