Rotor Cap 200 1987

Need Help Quickly... Rotor Cap will NOT come off!

I am going to change the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor on my '87 240, but I cannot remove the rotor cap. The Chilton Manual says the rotor cap should come off by just pulling it straight up. But I've tried pulling it up and even tried prying it up with a large screwdriver, but it does not move at all. I tried using pliers to grab and twist it, but the sides of the cap started shredding.

Also, any recommended plug wires and plug???

Any tips/assistance will be appreciated.
