Twin Cam -- Brakes and Auto Trans 700

Hi..I have recently acquired an 89 16-valve wagon. Two things I notoced are that it shifts rathr late -- into 3rd at about 40 mph and 4th at over 50 mph. I know they have a different auto trans, but is this normal or an indication of looming trans failure?? Also, the ABS brake light is on, and sometimes you can feel a hard metal friction in the pedal itself (not pads/calipers, etc -- they seem fine), and only when starting off, esp. backing up. It only lasts for a second or two. There is plenty of pedal and the brakes otherwise seem fine. Is there something about the ABS system that would cause this symptom ?? thanks all
