164/E Steering Column Help 140-160 1970

Hello Brickboarders!
I need some help with 164 steering columns. I recently removed the column from my '70 Automatic. It had a bad u-joint due to a front-end collision years ago. I found and pulled a good column from a '72 E Automatic. Now the ignition switch/lock does not line up and is about 1/4 inch closer to the steering wheel (the covers don't fit either). My question is: can I remove the bearings (without destroying them) and switch column tubes? Or should I take the column to a machine shop and have the slot for the lock enlarged for the 1/4 inch difference?
Thanks,
Nick
