Got the scan, got the code: PO440. Sez 'it's the cat'.....Should I believe it?......... S90-V90 1997

Housekeeping things first.

#1, my 1997 965 is not badged a V90, but using that designation gets this post separable from the 940 folks. Simpler, yes?

#2 This is a follow-on from my earlier post "Getting feet wet with OBDII...."

OK. AutoZone was very polite and helpful (plug plug!). Scanner showed PO440, and I got a little printed receipt-looking paper saying "evaporation control system malfunction".

I said, "Hmmm, on my 240s that system is one that pulls out gas vapors from intake manifold so as to avoid "hot soak". AutoZone guy goes back to back room checks with manager. then sez " Manager sez is the catalytic converter, do you know what that is?"

Priced their unit $122.99, universal fit => will need welding and won't be OEM or even close to it.

What about the O2 sensors? Will they need replacement, too?

Should I believe that it really isthe cat? Car has 133K and in reviewing the service records from PO's Volvo dealer I found no cat replacement. I did find all 6 coil packs replaced recently. Also a note about oil seal allowing oil into cyl.#1 and need for new power stages on #1 and #6 , repair declined.

Your thoughts and advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks even more,

Bob
