LH-2.4 and LH-3.1 Differences 200

I've been trying to diagnose a rich running problem with my 1990 240DL wagon (see Fuel Injection Diagnostics-Too Rich dated 8-24). I've gone through the archives here, the 700/900 FAQ, and a newly acquired Bently manual for info on diagnostic codes, testing, and troubleshooting. I'd like to ask if there are any differences in the diagnostic codes between the LH-2.4 and LH-3.1 fuel injection systems (my car has the latter). And I'd also like to know if other ECUs can be substituted for the 572 unit that is installed in my car. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
