Mystery wire 200

Hi Bricks:
Been since 2002 and my 164 since I had a question, I've come up in the world to a '89 240 (hate those circuit board tailights!).....anyhow in messing with the back up light switch and wiring, foir some dumb reason I looked under the car for wires and noticed the white wire coming down the right side of the transmission into what looks like a fat fuse holder, the wire and unit looked a little "shaky" with some bare wire showing and some old electrical tape peeling off. As it wasn't what I was working on I wire tied it off to prevent shorting for a future time. I haven't bought a manual yet so I have no idea what this beast is and what it does. Should I get on it right away or just tape it all up to prevent shorts? Thanks a million, good to be back.
