EGR and a LOT of black smoke 700

I noticed that the hose connected to the EGR on my 740 TD was disconnected and fixed it. But now when driving I get a LOT of black smoke coming from the exhaust and a noticeable loss of power. Remove the hose and everything runs better. I've searched the brickboard on EGR's and there seems to be some indication about cleaning and/or repairing the EGR but none seem to match my particular symptoms. Could there be issues else where associated with the EGR that could be causing this?

Also, if anyone can help in providing me with steps to clean/repair my EGR I would be more than willing to document the procedure with pictures on my website for others to reference.

thanks
