rusted rocker panel-removal 200

Would it be okay to take out the rockers on a 240 for replacement if I'm not ready to have the new ones welded in right away? ' Just wanted to make sure that it wouldn't cause a structural problem.I want to clean up the metal inside of the rocker cavity and paint with POR 15 before the new panel goes on. Would POR 15 be beneficial in this area? I'll use weld thru primer on the areas where the metal will be welded. ' Got a new set of rockers for $40 each. I have a handheld sand blaster that I was going to use to remove all of the rust from the inner sill.

Thanks,
Dave
