temperature gauge works sometimes 200 1988

Hello,

The temperature gauge in my 1988 245 works only some of the time. The problem persists even after the compensation board was repaired. When the gauge does decide it wants to work, it goes to the 9 o'clock position and stays there like it should.

A mechanic-friend said to replace the thermostat on the engine (it's has a slight coating of grit / oil). I'm inclined to think it's an electrical problem somewhere because of the inconsistency of the problem.

Does the thermostat and / or it's housing on the engine have an electrical lead that could be fouled, thus causing this problem?
