88 wagon smokes on startup

Hi Bob, thanks for your reply. Do you mean that I should remove the cap on the overflow tank, then watch the filler hole (which I just uncapped) while my able assistant (wife) starts it up, and see if the coolant rises out the filler hole
(or at least makes the coolant level rise visibly)?

I'll try that tomorrow morning if that's what you mean.

Just to make sure: the smoke is coming out the exhaust, and looks grey like oil but I admit I haven't gotten a good whif of it.
