How does the idle change when the ac compressor is on? 700

Does anyone know just how the idle is increased when the ac compressor comes on? On my older carburated cars the throttle linkage was simply(?) pulled by a solenoid. I've read some people say it has something to do with the idle air control valve but I'm assuming it's allready open all the way when idleing and I don't seeing how changing it's position would increase idle. The engine has to get more gas to idle at a higher speed. Is this all taken care of by the ECU? Does it get a "compressor on" signal and cause the injectors to squirt more fuel?
