Smearing Foam Crud from the Vents 900 1993

My wife's 1993 940T is blowing what appears to be little black specks and larger bits of a brownish-blackish-gray foam crud out of the AC/Heater vents.

What is that crap?

My wife's pretty angry because that stuff has got on her clothes.

Is there an easy way to get the vent covers off without cracking/breaking the plastic so I can take shop vac to the vent holes to extract as much of that stuff as possible?

Thanks,

Chris
