Tired of gas guage 'flicking'

Two of three Volvos I've owned have had problems with the gas gauge needle "sticking" and thus resting on the E with the key in the ignition. From this website, I learned that the "flick hard with your finger on the dash plastic near the guage" trick, and it works okay, but it's now to the point where I have to flick it every time I start up, and the repeated pounding (I sometimes have to flick 10-15 times before the needle pops up) annoys my wife (if she's with me) and doesn't feel all that good on my middle finger. I was just wondering if anyone knows of any other "tricks" to try. Has anyone ever drilled a small hole in their "glass" and pressed in the base of the needle with a sharp object? Would that work?
