The High idle on my 87 245 was caused by incorrect ignition timing.
Here's what happened. I cleaned the T-body and put in new plugs. The car ran much better but it had always had this 1100 RPM idle I so I tried to improve that by cleaning the IAC and rerigging the throttle linkage including the TPS. Then I got the high idle. Rechecked throttle rigging. Checked for vacuum leaks. Functionally tested TPS and IAC. Disassembled IAC (per 7/9FAQ) cleaned and reassembled, checked for voltages and grounds...everywhere.... you get the idea.
Well here's what I think happened: I've had this car 2 years and the previous owner probably fixed or had fixed an idle problem by simply adjusting the timing. Of course all that did what create another problem that masked an original idle issue. The original idle issue was almost definately related to the IAC cause as soon as I cleaned it, that issue went away, but the incorrect ign timing now showed up as a high idle since the original problem was fixed.
At least that's what I think happened. Who knows? Anyways, The car now idles at about 900 RPM as read off a dwell meter. I hate to say it but I wish the idle were a little smoother. I put in Bosch WR7DC plugs and left them with the gap they came with, .037". My owners manual says they should be from .024" to .028". Is there a perfered end of that range or should I just shoot for .026" and be done with it.
Thanks again to Art Benstein and everyone else who posted about my high idle problem.
