My horn was intermittant; it seemed to relate to the rotation of the steering wheel, so I assumed it was a horn ring contact issue. The FAQ had great advice under Steering for removing the steering wheel on this airbag equipped car, in order to get to the horn ring.
After removing the pad, I could see that if I lifted the spring-loaded pin that contacted the horn ring, it was not springing back properly. I then removed the wheel. Here's where the FAQ was invaluable; I would have had no clue about the screw used to lock the airbag contact reel.
When I got the wheel off however, I was surprised to find that there was no spring associated with the contact pin in the wheel. After examining a bit closer, it seemed that the only force causing the contact pin to press against the horn ring, was provided by the springiness of the contact pin wire itself. The wire fits into a rubber clip in the steering wheel, which provides a leverage point from which the wire can push the contact pin. By straghtening out the wire a bit to force more springiness against the contact pin, I was able to get the horn working fine.
Is this the way it's supposed to work - using the contact pin wire springiness - or was my fix just a lucky fudge, and there's supposed to be an actual spring on the contact?
