1984 volvo won't start. has spark. 200

My '84 242 died one day while i was driving it ane i havent been able to start it since, except for one time when i ahd copious amounts of starter fluid in there (have since not been able to replicate this incidence...will fire and then die about 1 second later). Anyhow, it has spark from the coil, and to plug. The fuses are fine. Is the fuel pump in the tank or is it external? And what's involved in replacing i? Also, i've read that it could be the fuel pump relay...where is this relay located?.
