740 Turbo going though Fuel Pressure Regulators 700 1989

About 1 year ago, on a cross country trip, the FPR on my 180K died - no problem, easily replaced with a new one and all was well until it happened again about 6K miles later (2 months ago). Replaced again with a new Bosch unit as well as a new main fuel pump (it was original, anyway).

Now, it appears that less than 1K miles later it has done it again. No power, black smoke, occasional stalling - same as the last two times. Is there something that I am overlooking that is KILLING these FPR's? Now, I *love* this 740 Turbo and by and large it has been a very reliable car, but this problem is making by wary of driving it for fear of getting stuck someplace. Short of carrying a spare FPR, what else can I look at that may be the underlying cause of these FPR failures? Any help appreciate!
