240 belt adjutments

hey guys,

had the alternator bolt fall out and it took out all my belts cept the steering to ac one. well after a long day and using up all my cuss words ( especially trying to find then access the bolt behind the ac) , the belts are back on and tightened . sort of. what's the procedure for using the long bolts on the slotted holder to fine tune the tension? does screwing in the 10mm long bolt tighten or loosen? any help would be appreciated.
