Always with the Questions? S90-V90

The vapor cannistor for recircling of gasses into the intake, does the purge valve supposed to tick like the one on my car does when the engine is running?
Is there a maintance or a way to check (speaking of the cannistor and the valve) it's doing what it's supposed to do?
Lastly, the vacuum hose that goes to the purge valve (that goes to the vapor cannistor) is the largest hose on the vacuum tree, it pulls alot of vacuum I'm thinking. What would happen to the car with this unhooked and plugged up, set off check engine lights and hurt things, or would this give better power and fuel mileage?
Thanks all
Poolman
