I believe "MPG" refers to the Volvo-Chrysler "Computerized" ignition system that was introduced on some '81 240s (just on 242s I've heard).

The V-C ignition continued thru the '88 model year, but the "MPG" term seems to have been dropped after 2 or 3 years. You should have the V-C Ignition CU on the right inner fender, just forward and below the washer tank.
