89 740gl random starting problem 700

1. Watch the tach whilst cranking - should jump a little, indicating RPM sensor and power stage work. If dead, suspect RPM sensor first - common fault.
2. Listen for fuel pump as you release key - if silent suspect fuel pump relay - common fault. If tach is dead but you hear pump, suspect power stage.
3. If OK so far, check for spark. If no spark, your coil may be intermittent or you may have an ht lead or rotor arm fault.
