Leaking fuel injectors may have caused a rich mixture in the chambers and the engine backfired causing the cat to blow a piece out blocking the exhaust flow.

Check your fuel mixure, ie: vaccuum tubing, air intake, tps, amm, iac, knock sensor, temp sensor, computer and injector seals.
