When he said "VW bugs" I knew ther may be an adjustment proceedure issue.

You adjust the valves on the boxer-4 differently than on the inline-4 in our Volvos. If he did it "VW style" you will certainly have an issue as they are adjusted both on one cylinder at the same time.

Use the "rule of nines" as John suggested and described and you should be OK.
