I have had these exact symptoms and fixed it with a new fuel pressure regulator. It is noteworthy that mine did not exhibit the classic failure symptoms of gas/fumes in the vacuum line indicative of a failed membrane in the FPR.

With the FPR and a set of new plugs I was good to go (the hard starting really had them fouled up badly).
