The line isn't rubber the whole way back, it changes to steel and then back to rubber. The rubber from the sending unit is about 18" long. I'd get about a foor extra, run the line and trim it to fit. It may be the sending unit that is leaking, I had a bad one on my '88 wagon. It was the old style sending unit with the steel goosenecks for the feed and return. They just rotted out from the salty New England winters.
