Let's talk OBD-II S90-V90

This doesn't really apply here since I've got a 95' 960 but it doesn't hurt to ask. I was at a car clinic at a local Volvo dealer and he hooked up a scan gauge with an adapter to check for codes. It hooked up in the same place where you would normally check the codes under the hood. It surprised me since I thought the codes were only readable by counting the blinking red light.

Is this tool readily available? It seemed so much faster and efficient.
